Lake Hefner is an Oklahoma City reservoir named after one of the city’s previous mayors. It’s flanked by the Lake Hefner Dam and the Lake Hefner Parkway. To the south of the lake, you’ll find a beautiful forest area that hasn’t been much developed.
It was needed in the mid-1900s to ensure the city has a big enough water supply but its value has grown over the years. Today the lake and the space around it is a popular spot for locals & tourists to relax and enjoy sporting activities.
Lake Hefner does attract water sport enthusiasts but if you enjoy exploring you’ll also enjoy a visit. Around the lake, you’ll find over 9 miles of bike trails that you can run, walk on or ride. It gives you a lot to explore and offers stunning views of the area.
No matter your interests you’re bound to find an activity to take part in during your visit to Lake Hefner. The area caters to golfers thanks to the Lake Hefner golf course and kite surfers can often be seen around.
Oklahoma City locals enjoy boating and fishing. Fishermen often pull out catfish, bass, and bluegill. There’s even a YMCA sailing school and the local boat club hosts boat races. It’s a members-only club but races are open to the public.
A picnic next to the lake is idyllic, but also consider the lake’s restaurants such as Red Rock Canyon Grill which is a favorite for Oklahoma City residents. Situated on the lake it will give you the perfect vantage point to watch a sunset. Don’t forget to take a picture of the picturesque lighthouse before you go home.
At this Oklahoma City attraction, you’ll find a safe, paved parking lot near the docks so it’s easily accessible.
